Description

"Outrage Culture"

  • Tribalism: putting group identity above individual identity

  • What is different about today?

    • Internet/social medium changed

What concerns me:

  • We seem to be more concerned with:

    • Winning arguments instead of winning people’s hearts

    • Which team I'm on instead of actual teamwork

    • Being a supporter instead of being supportive

    • Virtue signaling instead of living out of actual virtue

    • Speaking the "truth" instead of living the truth

    • Too much “them” & not enough “I”

Matthew 7:1-2 “Refuse to be a critic full of bias toward others, and judgment will not be passed on you. For you’ll be judged by the same standard that you’ve used to judge others. The measurement you use on them will be used on you.

7:3-5 “Why would you focus on the flaw in someone else’s life and yet fail to notice the glaring flaws of your own? How could you say to your friend, ‘Let me show you whelre you’re wrong,’ when you’re guilty of even more? You’re being hypercritical and a hypocrite! First acknowledge your own ‘blind spots’ and deal with them, and then you’ll be capable of dealing with the ‘blind spot’ of your friend.”

7:12 “In everything you do, be careful to treat others in the same way you’d want them to treat you, for that is the essence of all the teachings of the Law and the Prophets.”

What is Matthew 7 telling us?

  • Should we just not act? NO!

  • Be careful how you judge. For the measure by which you judge, you will be judged.

  • Be dilligent to deal with "I" before you try to deal with "them".

  • Do to others what you would want done to you.

  • MAKE SURE YOU’RE HEARING ALL SIDES

  • PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR SHOES

We have been given the ministry of reconciliation (redemption).

What is the solution?

1. SPEAK UP!

‭‭1 CORINTHIANS‬ ‭14:26‬ ‭AMP‬‬ “When you meet together, each one has a psalm, a teaching, a revelation (disclosure of special knowledge), a tongue, or an interpretation. Let everything be constructive and edifying and done for the good of all the church.”

If you have something worth saying, say it.

  • Speak from humility & gratitude.

  • Be solution-focused.

  • “Deconstruction without reconstruction is just destruction.”

2. New "wine skin"

CODEPENDENT = "I ALWAYS need you."

INDEPENDENT = "I don't need you."

INTERDEPENDENT = Romans 12:5 “so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”

3. HAVE MORE CONVERSATIONS!

Talk to people who will give you honest feedback.

Seek the truth, even if it doesn't come from you.
