Faithful to Obey

Matthew 5:17-19 AMP "Do not think that I have come to do away with or undo the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to do away with or undo but to complete and fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until the sky and earth pass away and perish, not one smallest letter nor one little hook [identifying certain Hebrew letters] will pass from the Law until all things [it foreshadows] are accomplished. Whoever then breaks or does away with or relaxes one of the least [important] of these commandments and teaches men so shall be called least [important] in the kingdom of heaven, but he who practices them and teaches others to do so shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

Romans 3:31 NLT "Well then, if we emphasize faith, does this mean that we can forget about the law? Of course not! In fact, only when we have faith do we truly fulfill the law."

Hebrews 10:16-18 NKJV "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them," then He adds, "Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."

Romans 2:14-15a NLT "Even Gentiles, who do not have God's written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. They demonstrate that God's law is written in their hearts."

There are 2 types of God’s laws:

  1. Laws that set the boundaries of sin.
    1. Ex. The “thou shall nots”, law of sin & death, etc.
  2. Laws that when obeyed open the promises that God has made to His people.
    1. Ex. The promises of Deut. 28 that say if you obey blessed will you be.
    2. Ex. Matt. 6:33 seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Matthew 5:17 AMP "Do not think that I have come to do away with or undo the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to do away with or undo but to complete and fulfill them."

Romans 13:8 NAS "Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law."

Romans 8:4 & 7 NAS 4 "so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit." 7 "because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so."

Luke 16:16-17 AMP "Until John came, there were the Law and the Prophets; since then the good news (the Gospel) of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone strives violently to go in [would force his own way rather than God's way into it]. Yet it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dot of the Law to fail and become void."

  • Grace does not do away with the law, it offers unmeasured forgiveness for any failure.
  • Grace does not close doors opened by sin or eliminate any natural repercussions.
  • Grace does offer strength and cleansing as you are “resisting the devil to make him flee from you”.
  • When we break a law we are imprisoned by the principle that is over that sin.
  • The ruler of that prison is who we have to, by force, obey.
  • Many times people cry out for deliverance from the consequences of breaking that law but they don’t want to submit to the law.

Romans 2:13 NLT "Merely listening to the law doesn't make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight."

Romans 2:25-27 NLT "The Jewish ceremony of circumcision has value only if you obey God's law. But if you don't obey God's law, you are no better off than an uncircumcised Gentile. And if the Gentiles obey God's law, won't God declare them to be his own people? In fact, uncircumcised Gentiles who keep God's law will condemn you Jews who are circumcised and possess God's law but don't obey it."

  • Jesus even says in John 14:15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
  • This is not just if you have feelings for Me but if you love Me and My ways it will be shown by keeping my commandments.
  • James 4:11-12 NAS "Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor?"
