Creating an Outflow

James 2:14-17 NAS 14 What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled," and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? 17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.

As infants we only receive with no giving.

·        There is only inflow with no outflow

Emotionally healthy young adults come from knowing their parents truly love them

·        This happens when parents unconditionally love the child and show that love

○    At some point the child must begin to give back out of what they’ve received.

When the child is not secure they have a massive need for intake

  • This craving is an attempt to fill the void in them

  • Their life becomes “ME” centered

  • This produces only inflow with no outflow

    • Until an outflow is created their condition won't change

How much can you be complimented without internalizing it?

To be healthy we must have an outflow

·        Philippians 2:4-5 NAS do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.

·        Romans 15:1 NAS Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength and not just please ourselves.

There are biological aspect of receiving

·        Chemicals release in our bodies when we’re given to.

o   These are the same chemicals that release when we find something pleasurable

Coupled with the biological is the psychological

·        We have a tendency to exaggeratedly become what we’re complimented on.

○    The problem of this is that when the natural flow of complimenting stops the person will begin to artificially create the flow.

§  Artificially creating the flow consists of giving to get.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 NAS But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. 2For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, 4treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.

According to those that study the brain we can change our brain with our mind.

·        We can retrain our brains to choose when the pleasure chemicals release.

Without an outflow we don’t grow

·        Some are still infant in their understanding and actions because they never exercise the deficient areas of their lives.

Hebrews 5:11-14 NAS 11 Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.

WORSHIP is a great outflow

·        Learn to make worship about God & Jesus
