Acting Out Your Identity

  1.  Identity

    1. New creation

    2. Redeemed from the curse

    3. The righteousness of God in Jesus (2 Cor. 5:21)

    4. Child of God

    5. Heir to his kingdom

    6. Saint not sinner

    7. The joy set before him, that made the cross worth it (Heb. 12:2)

    8. Kings and priests - authority and access to his heart (Rev. 1:6)

    9. Seated with Jesus in heavenly places (2 Cor. 5:21)

    10. Co-laborers (1 Cor. 3:9)

    11. Bride of Jesus

  2. Rooted and secured - for a purpose

    1. Wholly worth it by itself - but part of a larger picture

    2. Be in tune w/ his perspective by searching his heart

    3. Rev. 3:22 - “The one whose heart is open let him listen carefully to what the Spirit is saying now to the churches.”

  3. Even this is a byproduct of established identity - when you know the kingdom is your inheritance, you’re invested in knowing what God wants to do with it and seeing it flourish

  4. Know your identity - know who i’ve said you are - now act like it

  5. Making you mature by establishing identity - the fulfillment of that maturity is joining your word to God’s an acting out of it

    1. Romans 8:14-17 - 14 The mature children of God are those who are moved by the impulses of the Holy Spirit. 15 And you did not receive the “spirit of religious duty,” leading you back into the fear of never being good enough. But you have received the “Spirit of full acceptance,” enfolding you into the family of God. And you will never feel orphaned, for as he rises up within us, our spirits join him in saying the words of tender affection, “Beloved Father!” 16 For the Holy Spirit makes God’s fatherhood real to us as he whispers into our innermost being, “You are God’s beloved child!”

    2. 17 And since we are his true children, we qualify to share all his treasures, for indeed, we are heirs of God himself. And since we are joined to Christ, we also inherit all that he is and all that he has. We will experience being co-glorified with him provided that we accept his sufferings as our own.

  6. Confirmed identity - knowing we’re in good standing - so we are motivated to act on it

  7. How does this fit into God’s larger purpose - how do we act on it

    1. Partnership - to establish and expand his kingdom on earth

    2. Discipleship - to bring others into the kingdom, affirm their identity, so that they can do the same for others

  1. God’s purpose from the beginning - to join with him out of free will because we are motivated by love (see Rom. 8:14)

  2. How confident is God in his love that he can surrender authority to us, knowing that his purposes will still be accomplished because his love will motivate us to join him

  3. He created all and has authority over us - but he ceded his authority because of his desire for us

  4. Original purpose - Adam and Eve

    1. Genesis 1:26-28 - 26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

  5. Desired for us to partner with us so much that he gave Adam and Eve his authority knowing that they would turn it over to Satan

  6. Even then he had a plan to get it back for us

    1. Rev. 13:8 - “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

  7. God knew we would need redeemed and authority returned to us

    1. He so valued it that it was worthy giving his son, and he had already committed himself to it before Adam even failed

  8. Once Jesus came and won that authority back, he again surrendered it to us

    1. Matthew 28:18-20 - “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”

      1. Go in HIS authority

  9. Partnership is the open secret of the kingdom

    1. Paul called it the mystery of the gospel

    2. Ephesians 3:3-6 (TPT) - 3 For this wonderful mystery, which I briefly described, was given to me by divine revelation, 4 so that whenever you read it you will be able to understand my revelation and insight into the secret mystery of the Messiah. 5 There has never been a generation that has been given the detailed understanding of this glorious and divine mystery until now. He kept it a secret until this generation. God is revealing it only now to his sacred apostles and prophets by the Holy Spirit. 6 Here’s the secret: The gospel of grace has made you, non-Jewish believers, into coheirs of his promise through your union with him. And you have now become members of his body—one with the Anointed One!

    3. God restored his purpose to give us his kingdom through Jesus

      1. Now what are you going to do with it

    4. 9 My passion is to enlighten every person to this divine mystery. It was hidden for ages past until now, and kept a secret in the heart of God, the Creator of all. 10 The purpose of this was to unveil before every throne and rank of angelic orders in the heavenly realm God’s full and diverse wisdom revealed through the church. 11 This perfectly wise plan was destined from eternal ages and fulfilled completely in our Lord Jesus Christ, so that now 12 we have boldness through him, and free access as kings before the Father because of our complete confidence in Christ’s faithfulness.

  10. What would you do if you knew the kingdom was yours - how much bolder would you be to speak its message and try to bring people into it

  11. God’s kingdom is unending, but it manifests on earth only to the extent we partner with him and bring it here

  12. God doesn’t just want to work with us, He put a system in place that requires our participation to see His work complete on earth.

  13. We have access to it as much as we explore, expand, and follow him

  14. Salvation is just the entry point - it cost Jesus to purchase it, but now it’s free

    1. He died once for all - we don’t have to keep going back to it

    2. If you remain focused on whether your sin is forgiven, you’re distracted from expanding the kingdom

  15. When we stay stuck at salvation, it’s like being given the kingdom to explore and develop, and we just walk in the gate, celebrate for a little bit, and then set up camp next to the gate.

  1. Adam - be fruitful and multiply

    1. Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

  2. Jesus - make disciples

    1. Matthew 28:18-20 - “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”

  3. The message of the second Adam is the same as the first, it’s just spiritual instead of physical

  4. Adam multiplied physically. We are called to help God with spiritually multiplication. By bringing in adopted sons and daughters. The combination of an open heart and the Holy Spirit creates offspring.

  5. No matter how good the messages are, and how much we grow in here, we’re not fulfilling our purpose if it doesn’t make it outside these walls

  6. You have something to share - no matter where you are

  7. Non-believers and believers - show them Jesus even if you can’t say his name

  8. Salvation is just the entry point - making disciples means showing them the kingdom and confirming their identity

  9. Speaking into their lives as God sees them, and how they look in the future

  10. Revelation 19:10 - the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

    1. When you speak what God says about someone, you’re revealed the heart of Jesus and who He is. When you prophesy to someone the finished product of who they are, you’re both speaking from the future as how God already sees them and you’re propelling them into it by speaking it into existence.

    2. When God speaks, he creates. His word is life. He’s already spoke about who we are, and those around us.

      1. By partnering with him, and speaking that word over people, we create in them

  11. Matthew 5:43-45 TPT “Your ancestors have also been taught ‘Love your neighbors and hate the one who hates you.’ However, I say to you, love your enemy, bless the one who curses you, do something wonderful for the one who hates you, and respond to the very ones who persecute you by praying for them. For that will reveal your identity as children of your heavenly Father. He is kind to all by bringing the sunrise to warm and rainfall to refresh whether a person does what is good or evil.”

    1. Your identity as a child of God is manifested when you connect with the Spirit by speaking his heart for that person over even when they’re outward actions are most opposite to that. By doing so, you’re not just revealing your identity, but it’s pointing back to Jesus. Because only through Jesus can you take a curse and transform it into a blessing. That’s what he did on the cross, took the curse that was on all of us and turned it into the blessing of Abraham that we can all enter into.

  12. Jesus and his disciples - showed them the way to salvation, taught them about his kingdom, and told them who they were and what they’re place was in that kingdom

    1. “The people who influenced me the most aren’t the ones who told me what to do, but they told me who I was.” - Bob Goff

    2. Discipleship- speaking into others what God says about them.

  • Moses: i am nobody and can’t speak right - voice of a nation

    • Exodus 3:10-11 - you’ll lead your people out of Egypt

  • Gideon: a coward who was the lowliest of his tribe - mighty man of valor

    • Judges 5:12 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, “The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.”

  • Peter: unable to stand by Jesus under pressure - a rock

    • Matthew 16:18 - And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rockb I will build my church, and the gates of hellc shall not prevail against it.

  1. Confident in your identity, stepping into maturity, co-labor with God by speaking His identity into others so they become rooted in it, grow in maturity, and then do the same to someone else. That’s the cycle.
