Healthy Trees

James 3:2 NAS For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

Proverbs 18:21 NAS Death and life are in the power of the tongue

Matthew 12:33-37 AMP 33 Either make the tree sound (healthy and good), and its fruit sound (healthy and good), or make the tree rotten (diseased and bad), and its fruit rotten (diseased and bad); for the tree is known and recognized and judged by its fruit.

34 You offspring of vipers! How can you speak good things when you are evil (wicked)? For out of the fullness (the overflow, the superabundance) of the heart the mouth speaks.

35 The good man from his inner good treasure flings forth good things, and the evil man out of his inner evil storehouse flings forth evil things.

36 But I tell you, on the day of judgment men will have to give account for every idle (inoperative, nonworking) word they speak.

37 For by your words you will be justified and acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned and sentenced.

Vs 36 & 37 talk about a legal system

  • This court set up

    • We make legal agreements by our words

    • These agreements must be judged or they’ll harm us.

    • Matthew 18:19 AMP Again I tell you, if two of you on earth agree (harmonize together, make a symphony together) about whatever [anything and everything] they may ask, it will come to pass and be done for them by My Father in heaven.

Sometimes we don’t have a reference for spiritual health

  • We have entrance of parasites and diseases into our spiritual lives

    • Many times these are undetected until it’s too late and things are critical

  • This tells us that the way we can tell if there is an unhealthy things is by our words

    • Don’t use the world’s talk to determine if yours is ok

Idle (Greek) argos (ar-gos'); inactive, i.e. unemployed; (by implication) lazy, useless

  • KJV - barren, idle, slow.

    • In the parable of the talents the guy that didn’t profit ended up in trouble

Sometimes you gotta squeeze the fruit to see if what’s inside is good.

  • What comes out when your squeezed?

    • Job 27:4 NKJV My lips will not speak wickedness, Nor my tongue utter deceit.

    • Proverbs 21:23 NAS He who guards his mouth and his tongue, Guards his soul from troubles.

    • James 3:10-12 NAS 10 from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. 11 Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water?  12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.

  • You will be a part of the group going nowhere to just point out what’s wrong with things.

  • You will be a part of a successful minority to only discuss what you intend to solve.

Verbally dumping to people that will only coddle us and our problem will only pollute our lives

  • Seeking Godly counsel from mature Christians will keep us healthy

Because our words have power we can use them to bring great things into our lives.

We need to train ourselves to speak:

  1. Who we are

  2. Who God is

  3. What is promised to us

Genesis 1:3 NAS Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

Hebrews 11:3 NKJV By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word (Gr. utterance) of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
