Effective Prayer - Class 2: Beleiving & Receiving

We must believe that God hears us

1 John 5:13-15New American Standard Bible (NASB)

13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence which we have [a]before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears usin whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

Basic steps of prayer:

1. Verify in the word that what you are asking is Biblical

     a. Not only Biblical, but the Father's will for you

2. Ask and believe that you may receive by faith

     a. Do not look at the natural to determine if you've received

3. If there is no manifestation, pray to examine if there is a hindrance to your prayer

     a. Hindrances can be: demonic, unforgiveness, lack of faith or not fully convinced

     b. Digging out hindrances is a huge catalyst of spiritual gowth in faith and knowledge

     c. Do not let no manifestation convince you that God has not answered your prayer

4. Supplement your original prayer with any newly gained knowledge

5. If at any time you fall out of faith, repent for unbelief and go back to step 1

Here is our persistence in prayer:

  • Matthew 7:7-9New American Standard Bible (NASB) [a]Ask, and it will be given to you; [b]seek, and you will find; [c]knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you [d]who, when his son asks for a loaf, [e]will give him a stone?

What does it mean to say "In Jesus name" at the end of a prayer?

  • John 14:13-14New American Standard Bible (NASB)

13 Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.14 If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.

If healing happened immediaely with Jesus, why doesn't it with me?

  • Some situations that look like people need healing might be being caused by unforgiveness or a demon and until the spiritual is dealt with, the physical will not change.
  • Why do some prayers get answered quickly or obviously?
  • Why do some seem to take forever?

Digging prayer is where you dig to find out why there's no manifestation.

  • Tongues are the best tool to dig with!
  • Where does fasting come in?

12 Things That Hinder Our Prayers

1) Unforgiveness

If we do not forgive others, our Heavenly Father will not forgive us. (Matthew 6:15)

2) An Unthankful Heart

Give God thanks in all things, because in all trials, painful situations, He is always with us. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says "...in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

3) Unbelief

Pray with confidence, believing God to do what He said He will do. James 1:6-7 says, "But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord."

4) Selfishness

Ask for the things in God's will, the outcome of which is to honor and glorify God. James 4:3 says, "You ask and do not receive because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures."

5) Failure to ask God to supply our needs

James 4:2 says "You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask."

6) Disobedience

Pray and ask God with confidence, obeying His commandments. 1 John 3:22 says "And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things which are pleasing in His sight."

7) Praying Alone

Pray with others and agree in faith. Matthew 18:19 says "Again I say to you that if two of you agree on eath concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven."

8) Disharmony in family or with others

Be at peace with one another. 1 Peter 3:7 says "Husband, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered."

9) Idols

Not putting God first in our lives. Ezekiel 14:2-5 says "And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 'Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them that which casuses them to stumble into iniquity. Shoul I let Myself be inquired of by them? Therefore speak to them, 'Thus says the Lord God: 'Everyone of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I the Lord will answer him who comes, according to the multitude of his idols, that I may seize the house of Israel by their heart, because they are all estranged from Me by their idols.'"

10) Forgetting the Poor

Ignoring and not having compassion. Proverbs 21:13 says "Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will also cry himself and not be heard."

11) Lack of Reconciliation

Bearing malice, hate, grudge etc. Matthew 5:23,24 says "Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift."

12) Not Wanting to Wait on God

Matthew 7:7-8 says "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you fill find; knock and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened."
